Gems Host Hatters In Local Derby
This Sunday sees the Derbyshire Gems return to WNBL league action as they host local rivals Sheffield Hatters at Queens Park Sports Centre in Chesterfield.
The Gems, who are the Women's section of the Arrows club, are in their debut season at National League level having tasted a league and cup double success last season in the Ladies Leeds League. For the first time in the Arrows history, the club's women's team will go head to head with neighbours Sheffield Hatters at National League level.
Pete Kelly's Gems side come into the contest boasting the better record of the two teams as his team occupy fourth position in the WNBL Division 2 table with a 4-1 league record. In contrast, the visiting Hatters team sit in eighth place in the divisional standings after going winless in their first five league outings.
The mouth watering match up could see an intriguing battle at the guard spot between Gems point guard Kendal James, who has top scored in each of the Gems last three games, and Hatters guard Steph Ogden who put up 33 points in the Hatters loss to Worcester this last weekend.
More than local bragging rights are up for grabs in this local derby as a win for the Derbyshire based Gems gives them the opportunity to take top spot in the division should results go their way, while a first win for the Hatters can move them to within just one victory of Sefton and Northamptonshire.
Sundays action gets underway at Queens Park Sports Centre in Chesterfield at 3:30pm.
